Over 17,500 pounds of food donated during the Stamp Out Hunger food drive

Every second Saturday in May, the US Postal Service letter carriers do double duty in the entire US: Besides delivering the mail, they also collect donations for their Stamp Out Hunger food drive. All donations stay in the community where they are donated. Within the Golden area that means all donations go to CAG!

This years’ food drive was on Saturday, May 13, 2023. We are happy to report the results so far: 17,500 pounds of food were donated and donations are still coming in throughout the week! The Covid hiatus of 2020 and 2021 hit all food pantries hard, especially since the need has increased since Covid. In 2022, CAG donated a total of 165,682 pounds of food, which was an increase of 44% in 2022 versus 2021. Read more in CAG’s 2022 recap.

For many years, Mandy Liao and Barry Bettis have been the USPS Food Drive Co-Chair and every year they work tirelessly to get volunteers together to sort the incoming food for the CAG food pantry.

Mandy gives a special shout-out to volunteers: “I just wanted to send out a huge THANK YOU to all of you who helped us on Saturday for the Postal Food Drive. With your help, we were able to collect nearly 9 tons of food and usually more continues to trickle in this week from the post office. Sorting and shelving all that food would not have been possible without you, so we can’t thank you enough.”
